Babelgum
Film fests have always had red carpets, audiences and the best of films. But Web P2P network Babelgum removes the musty carpet and invites everyone to pull up a cozy chair for its first online film fest. Last September, the channel asked filmmakers to submit films to compete for seven awards, including the Looking for Genius Award - for new talent in direction, writing and/or camera work - the Documentary Award; and the Social/Environment Award. The closing date is February 15, when films will be available on Babelgum for viewers to rate. The 10 highest-rated films in each category will go on to a jury of international experts, including Ally Derks, director of IDFA, and Sandra Ruch, the executive director of IDA, who will narrow it down to three selections for each category. The final award selection will then be made by honorary judge Spike Lee. Winners will be announced in May at a ceremony planned to coincide with the Cannes Film Festival. Winners will each receive €20,000 (US$29,000) and a share of ad revenue.
