Barbara Kopple has had a singular career in documentary, which has been celebrated by a host of awards, including feature doc Oscars for Harlan County USA and American Dream. As we noted in our November 2006 issue, her most recent effort, Shut Up & Sing (co-directed with Cecilia Peck and released through The Weinstein Company), demonstrated the filmmaker's persistence, convincing a leery Dixie Chicks that their story was something that needed to be turned into a feature film. And the effort was not lost on her viewers: "Barbara Kopple does it again. The access she had during such a tumultuous time in the Dixie Chicks' history was incredible, and a testament to her ability to build a trusting, lasting relationship with her subjects." Another noted the film was "a surprisingly provocative doc."

Beyond doing occasional work in both the advertising and drama fields, in 2006 Kopple also found time to direct The Edge of Madness for Green Dog Films, a film about Gaby Grebo, a photojournalist reporting on the ethnic cleansing in Sarajevo in 1994 who stumbles across Osama Bin Laden's training camps.
