There's much ado about the Academy's Best Doc shortlist - a list of 15 deserving names that includes films such as March of the Penguins, Murderball and Unknown White Male. Never satisfied with the status quo, however, realscreen offers its picks of films that should have made the list.
Indie doc-maker Ditsi Carolino infiltrated a Philippine jail to show how young boys live and compete amongst adult inmates. The result was Bunso, a heart wrenching expose that may have been too hard-hitting for the Academy's tastes.
It may not be top-of-mind since it first aired a year ago, but broadcast aside, Shake Hands with the Devil is a triple threat: it's a book, it's a film, and it's an audience favorite. From Peter Raymont, the film tells the story of Roméo Dallaire's return to Rwanda.
You'd think it was a slam dunk, but Eugene Jarecki's Why We Fight was ruled ineligible due to TV screenings. Time to change the rules about what is eligible for an Oscar nod.
